CharmedPurr Devon Rex

1. How long have you been breeding and showing?
I have been breeding and showing for 12 years. Before that I did foster and rescue. I have owned Devons since 2002.
2. What testing do you do on your breeding cats?
Each cat that is a potential breeding cat is tested for FELV & FIV, has a fecal and upper respiratory panel run, DNA tested for over 50 genetic diseases, HCM scanned or from HCM free proven lines, knees and hips check, teeth and gums examined and jaw checked for proper alignment.

3. At what age do you breed your cats and how often?
Females do not start breeding until age 1. They will have 1-2 litters per year depending on size of litters and health of queen. A queen will stay in a breeding program until around age 4. Males are also retired around age 4. When they retire, they are altered and placed in a pet home.
4. Do you alter your kittens before they leave you?
Absolutely. We only allow kittens to go unaltered to breeders we know very well. Devons are extremely fragile as kittens and are a tough breed to breed. Experience is needed or having the experience of a trusted mentor is essential. Our kittens are also FELV/FIV tested, fecal tested, microchipped, up to date on vaccines including rabies. We provide a health certificate from our veterinarian.
5. Why do you keep kittens until they are 4 months old?
Devons mature far slower than most cats. To undergo anesthesia they must be at least 3 pounds. I like my kittens to have 2-3 FVRCP vaccines and also rabies vaccine before they leave. It does cost me more to keep kittens longer however I want to make 100 percent certain they are healthy and ready to go before leaving..
6. What type of health guarantee do your offer?
I offer a 5 year health guarantee against congenital defects. This is far longer than what most breeders offer, I believe in the health of my cats and kittens and stand behind my lines.
7. Where do you register your cats?
They are registered with TICA which we are proud members of. They are also registrable with CFA, ACFA and LCWW all of which are registries I am a member of. Kittens are registered with TICA.

8. Do you cage your kittens?
Absolutely not.
9. With so many homeless kitties out there why do you breed?
I believe in preservation breeding - focusing on preserving an established breed, striving for excellent type (as set forth by the registries) and health. Many of my kittens go to families who have cat allergies. Devons give them the opportunity to have a cat which is such a gift. I do have a few pet rescue kitties and do try and give back and help whenever I can.
10. Do you allow people to visit your cattery?
Due to the safety of my cats and kittens, I do not allow visits. It is too easy for a visitor to unknowingly bring a bacteria, virus or fungus with them which could be devastating to young kittens. Also for insurance purposes and my own safety purposes we do not allow visitors as my cattery is also my home. We are happy to take videos, video chat with your kitten. I have always "picked" kittens for my families based on the kitten's personality and the makeup of the family they are going to. I have never had anyone unhappy or disappointed.

11. Do you earn money for showing your cats?
Unfortunately no. Showing is a very costly and time consuming event however getting judge's opinions on your cats and being able to do a side by side comparison of other competing Devons is a very important part to preserving the breed.
Any other questions, feel free to contact me! I love chatting about Devons.
